Bellevue Spotlight: Aldrea Reese-Brown
Meet Aldrea Reese-Brown, an inspiring member of our Bellevue community and the Executive Director of The Shepherd’s Door. After spending over 20 years as a homeschooling mom, Aldrea decided to invest in herself and her future by pursuing an MBA at Waynesburg University. This bold step coincided with a big transition in her life as her youngest daughter prepared to leave for college. Although Aldrea’s first post-homeschooling job was cut short by the pandemic, her passion and resilience led her to an opportunity that has become a dream come true—combining her love for God, community, and business.
At the heart of Aldrea’s work is The Shepherd’s Door, a one-of-a-kind neighborhood store in Bellevue. More than a shop, it’s a place of connection and encouragement. The store features fresh, unique items, including fair trade goods, handmade gifts, and works by local artists. While many initially mistake it for a thrift store, The Shepherd’s Door offers much more, including spiritual resources like Bibles and devotionals, alongside special memorabilia for life’s milestones. In addition, it supports the community directly through initiatives like the summer lunch program and Backpack Buddies, which ensure that local children have meals year-round. Aldrea considers the store’s dedicated volunteers “the helpers” who make these programs possible.
One of the store’s most treasured assets is a beautiful heirloom Nativity Scene entrusted to them by the former Emsworth United Presbyterian Church. For Aldrea, this display is more than a holiday tradition; it represents a legacy of faith and community. The Shepherd’s Door seeks to embody the love and care of Christ in everyday life, serving as a marketplace where no one needs to feel hungry or alone. Its mission is rooted in the belief that stewardship, belonging, and faith can transform lives, whether through a shared meal, an encouraging word, or a simple purchase.
Looking to the future, Aldrea has big plans for 2025. She hopes to double the store’s income and increase donations while also expanding the volunteer team. One exciting initiative is the upcoming “loved” campaign, running from February 1 through February 15. Visitors can receive a small token of love—no purchase required—and the chance to share in prayer. This Valentine’s season will also feature a Pop-Up Plant Sale, where community members can donate their plant “babies” to support the store. Aldrea warmly invites everyone to get involved by volunteering, donating, or simply stopping by to experience The Shepherd’s Door for themselves.
Through her work, Aldrea has fallen in love with Bellevue, where she’s built connections with people who share stories of the neighborhood’s rich history and evolving community. Living in Avalon, she dreams of seeing similar growth and vibrancy there. Aldrea’s enthusiasm for Bellevue is infectious—from hosting women’s groups to dreaming of bringing a movie theater back to town, she champions the charm and potential of this walkable, neighborly borough. Next time you’re in Bellevue, visit The Shepherd’s Door to say hello, pick up a unique gift, or just soak in the peace that Aldrea and her team work so hard to cultivate. You’ll leave inspired, just as Aldrea has inspired so many of us.
