Bellevue Forward’s work in community branding and placemaking was featured at the 2026 Integrate Conference, hosted by West Virginia University’s College of Creative Arts and Media. On June 6, Founding Chair RJ Thompson presented “Building Belonging Through Branding: How Bellevue Forward is Reimagining Community Identity,” sharing practical strategies that have helped transform Bellevue into a more connected, vibrant, and engaged community. Integrate brings together marketing and communications professionals from across the country to explore emerging trends, innovative strategies, and real-world applications in branding, communications, and community engagement. Through Bellevue Forward’s experience, attendees saw how marketing principles can be applied beyond traditional business settings to strengthen communities and create meaningful social impact.

The presentation explored how Bellevue Forward uses storytelling, creative placemaking, strategic communications, and community-centered branding to build a stronger sense of belonging. Examples included the Bellevue Spotlight Series, public art initiatives, business storytelling campaigns, community events such as the Bellevue Night Market, and digital engagement strategies that amplify local voices. Rather than focusing solely on promotion, the session demonstrated how authentic storytelling can become a form of community infrastructure—connecting residents, supporting small businesses, encouraging civic participation, and creating a shared narrative about Bellevue’s future.

A central theme of the presentation was that successful branding begins with purpose. Thompson discussed how clear information architecture, consistent messaging, and thoughtful use of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence can help organizations communicate more effectively while maintaining authenticity and trust. The session offered a practical framework for marketers, nonprofit leaders, community developers, and civic organizations seeking to create stronger connections with their audiences. Bellevue Forward’s experience serves as a reminder that branding is not simply about visibility—it is about helping people see themselves as part of a shared story and inspiring them to invest in the future of their community.
