What started as a beloved tradition at Brighton McClure Presbyterian Church continues to warm hearts—and taste buds—today at New Life Community Church. Born from the merger of Brighton McClure Presbyterian Church and Northminster Presbyterian Church, New Life Community Church proudly carries forward the annual Chili Cook-Off tradition.
This year marked the 15th annual cook-off (give or take a year!), and it was one of the most vibrant yet.
A Tradition with a Purpose
From the beginning, the chili cook-off has been about more than friendly competition—it’s been about giving back. Since becoming New Life Community Church, the event has served as a fundraiser for local causes and ministries.
For the third consecutive year, the church partnered with Aldrea Reese-Brown and The Shepherd’s Door. Thanks to the incredible generosity of participants and attendees, the event raised $2,300 through chili tastings, raffle baskets, entry fees, and the snack stand. An additional $300 from the bake sale will support the P23 ministry led by John Arlet.
That’s real impact—powered by chili and community spirit.

Family-Friendly Fun
Over the past few years, organizers have intentionally grown the cook-off into a true family and neighborhood celebration. And it shows.
Luke Robertson once again wowed guests as he moved from table to table, dazzling crowds with his sleight-of-hand magic. Meanwhile, Rebecca Kenar of ABC Balloon Twisting delighted children with colorful balloon creations, making the event especially welcoming for families.
The result? A joyful, intergenerational gathering where neighbors from different churches and across the community came together to connect.
20 Crockpots, 35 Baskets, and a Whole Lot of Flavor
One fun discovery over the years: the church’s electrical system can handle exactly 20 crockpots—and this year, they put it to the test with 20 chilis ready for tasting!
The competition was fierce, and judges Sousan Beninate, Gherry Tuscan, and RJ Thompson (Founding Chair of Bellevue Forward) had their work cut out for them. Congratulations to:
- 🥉 Third Place: Chris Stehman (Chili #11)
- 🥈 Runner-Up: Nick Arlet (Chili #14)
- 🏆 First Place: Brad Manjack (Chili #12)
- 🌶️ People’s Choice Award: Izaiah Stapinsky (Chili #17)
Adding even more excitement was the largest basket raffle yet, featuring 35 themed baskets generously donated and enthusiastically bid on by attendees.
A Recipe for Community
Events like this remind us what makes our community special: collaboration, generosity, and the simple joy of gathering together. Seeing neighbors from different congregations and across the neighborhood sharing food and laughter is what true community looks like.
The 15th Annual Chili Cook-Off wasn’t just a success—it was a celebration of connection and compassion.
Here’s to many more years of chili, fellowship, and making a difference together. 🌶️❤️
